So I picked up a Logitech G5 and brought it home to test out. It has a bunch of buttons so I figured that I needed to load the software and drivers that came with the mouse from it’s CD. Boy was that a mistake. The mouse Application was such a memory hog on my system I could tell a speed difference especially at bootup time. It was total bloatware with its shiny little systray icon and all the little button helper apps. I had enough of it after an hour and uninstalled it. I started setting up the buttons in the games I play and luckily it picked up all of the ones I wanted. That was a relief. Next I added the CPL no-acceleration reg key to remove all acceleration to make accurate snap-to headshots. This is a must for any gaming rig. Then I tested out a few games. Initial reaction was the precision was better than the dual optical by a long shot, so this made me happy. Another nice touch is the mini buttons that adjust the dpi precision right on the mouse. It adjusts from a low to a medium to a high setting with just a couple of clicks. That is a pretty nice feature that worked well on games like Battlefield 2 where you changed from walking FPS style to driving vehicles.
All in all I like the mouse as the precision is very good for gaming, and I think XP and up OS’s will be able to feed the button configurations to your games without the bloatware drivers that came on the CD, unless your game is really old. The bloatware is the only downside to the whole product. Game on !
